Paris is a city of art: whether poets, painters, singers or writers, many have been inspired by the City of Light. Galerie Roger-Viollet takes us on a tour of literary Paris, to meet the great authors who have contributed to the capital's renown.
The exhibition Un Abécédaire Littéraire Parisien, d'Aragon à Zola, presented from November 21, 2024 to February 1, 2025, reveals through 80 photographs the great writers who lived in Paris, and the neighborhoods that inspired some of French literature's most famous works.
Of course, it's impossible to talk about Paris and writers without mentioning Victor Hugo. These two are firmly linked - but they're not the only ones! Emile Zola, his department stores and the halles du Ventre, Paul Verlaine and his haunted cafés, Louis Aragon 's Paris in Aurélien... The capital has been the setting for some of France's greatest novels and poems.
The exhibition brings together a selection of shots by leading photographers who have immortalized Paris and its picturesque neighborhoods. These markets, packed stores, bookshops along the Seine, the Montmartre district and great restaurants have captured the imagination of writers, and have been immortalized in their works. We find photos by Janine Niepce, Eugène Atget, Gaston Paris, Charles Marville...
Not forgetting, of course, the portraits and images of writers living, playing and inventing in cafés, literary salons and Parisian parks.
Paris and its writers are revealed in this free exhibition to be discovered this winter at Galerie Roger-Viollet.
