They say silence is golden... These days, it's especially rare. The Cité des Sciences et de l' Industrie explores the place of silence in our modern societies, comparing it with its significance and importance in history, through an original exhibition presented from December 10, 2024, until September 2025.
Cars and horns, music, advertising, films, human voices and cries, animal noises... Sounds surround us all the time. Some are chosen, like music, while others are endured. In modern societies, where activity almost never stops, noise leaves little room for silence. As a result, silence is increasingly seen as a treasure, a much sought-after rarity.
The Silence exhibition at the Cité des Sciences takes visitors on an unusual journey into the world of silence. With the aid of headphones, visitors plunge into this immersive sound experience.
The science museum explains the love-hate relationship that humans have with silence. Silence can be both feared and desired, threatening and relaxing. The meaning of silence has evolved with the times, social norms and technological advances.
The exhibition also allows us to explore the different types of silence, to compare them with noise, to find out what we like and what bothers us between noise, calm and total silence. The answer may not be as obvious as it seems!
Embark on this unusual and silent journey, with the major exhibition at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie.
