A plunge into ecstasy and its representation in contemporary art... Lafayette Anticipations welcomes Mark Leckey 's first solo exhibition from April 2 to July 20, 2025. This retrospective brings together some twenty works, including previously unseen creations, around the theme ofecstasy, explored as a state of extreme emotion, a transport out of oneself, both spiritual and corporeal. A unique opportunity to discover the work of a major British artist.
Mark Leckey, winner of the Turner Prize in 2008, has been interested since the 1990s in the relationship between popular culture and technology, as well as in the themes of youth, social class, memory and nostalgia. "Ecstasy means to be moved, word for word, it's to be taken away from where you are",explains the artist, adding that his works translate "intense emotions that unbalance you, liberate you, carry you away". His work combines videos, sculptures, installations, music and performances, often constructed by collaging visual and sound elements from archives, the Internet or his own productions.
Present in the collections of major institutions such as the Centre Pompidou and MoMA, Mark Leckey fascinates through his approach to the emotional and supernatural dimensions of objects and images, which he makes palpable through technology. The exhibition at Lafayette Anticipations is in line with this approach, offering a reflection on the sensory and quasi-magical power of art. An experience designed to question our relationship with reality and our memories.
