Taking a leisurely stroll near the Grande Arche at La Défense, we come across a strange lamppost, which for a moment causes a bug in our brains: what's that car doing hanging from its top? What's more, it's upside down! It's not an unlikely accident that propelled the car several metres into the air, but a work of art that was intended to be temporary, but has now become part of the landscape and one of the sights to be seen in the district!
This lamp-car, a white Peugeot 406 to be precise, is a work by Benedetto Bufalino, which had been developed for the 2019 edition of Les Extatiques. The free, outdoorcontemporary art event returns every year, and this year welcomed this hijacking of an everyday object, here suspended 4m high! Although it was supposed to disappear at the end of the exhibition, it ended up taking up permanent residence at the foot of the arch.
When the sun goes down, this car lights up, combining contemporary art with a utility in the public space, an unusual work that brings a touch of madness to this business district. Born in 1982, Benedetto Bufalino specializes in the creation of diverted or manipulated objects. He hates the use of cars and has already proposed many other uses for this means of transport! So, which new work will make the biggest impression at the next edition of Les Extatiques?
