With hundreds of restaurants in the 13th arrondissement, it's hard to know where to go. We'd like to introduce you to Fleurs de Mai, a restaurant well known to Chinatown regulars, which does ravioli soups proud. The ravioli are homemade just before service, often right in front of us, and a cook, visible in the front, is even dedicated to this job, with rotisserie cooking to boot.
This family-run restaurant, opened in 1989, attracts a loyal clientele thanks to its authentic Chinese specialties and generous dishes. Located at 61 avenue de Choisy, the restaurant has retained a simple, friendly atmosphere, with tables close together to encourage exchange between gourmets.
Fleurs de Mai is a two-storey restaurant, a canteen-style boui-boui where you can eat on the go without any fuss. If you're looking for a cozy restaurant with a beautiful decor, you'll have to pass. The interior, renovated in 2016, is deliberately uncluttered, with modern touches such as yellow neon lights and grey tiles. That said, the upstairs is a much more pleasant place to dine with the family. Typical decor, authentic Hong Kong dishes and Cantonese cuisine, that's what awaits you.
Here, simplicity is at the heart of the experience, as are the recipes handed down for generations in the Chow family. Whether you're a fan of handmade shrimp ravioli or curious to try their juicy golden Peking duck, Fleurs de Mai has something for you to discover.
The star of the menu? Steamed free-range chicken accompanied by an unmistakable ginger sauce, ideal for enhancing any dish. Generous meat or vegetarian stews, as well as crispy salt-and-pepper sautéed shrimp , are also worth trying. To accompany your meal, why not try egg rolls or crispy egg rolls (in China), or opt for the new and surprising oyster omelette?
The menu is extensive, with over 160 choices. It's easy to get lost, but don't worry, the staff are always on hand to offer advice. If you're looking for a sure-fire suggestion, we highly recommend trying their shrimp ravioli soup, which you can customize with or without noodles. This soup is a real comfort, especially on cooler days. The ravioli are plump and there's no crying over the shrimp. Also good with roasts such as Peking pork or Peking duck.
During our visit, we also opted for stir-fried beef with rice noodles and vegetables, a generous and perfectly seasoned dish. For dessert, it's impossible to miss the 3 Couleurs, a typical Vietnamese dessert made with coconut milk, water chestnut, jackfruit, red beans and jelly, ideal for ending your meal on a sweet but light note.
Whether you choose to eat in, take away or have it delivered, Fleurs de Mai remains one of the best places to eat in the 13th arrondissement, accessible and warm, just like the Cantonese cuisine it serves. Whether you're a regular visitor or just passing through, this is an address to keep in mind.
Count €12.50 for shrimp ravioli soup with or without noodles, €7 for egg rolls and €13.50 for a portion of Peking duck. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. non-stop, except on Wednesdays.
