The Champs-de-Mars and Trocadéro vegetablization and refurbishment project upsets both 16th arrondissement locals and mayor Francis Szpiner. The city of Paris wishes to start works as soon as possible so they can be done for the 2024 Paris Olympics. But if the Place du Trocadéro was listed as historic monument, all these changes will not be allowed.
To hope and win this administrative struggle, Paris 16th arrondissement mayor requested for the Place du Trocadéro to be listed as historic monument. Minister of Culture Roselyne Bachelot said she asks the regional board of Île-de-France cultural affairs to study the file. If it was approved, the square will become untouchable, so is the Place de la Concorde the only place in the French capital city to currently enjoy this status.
For several months, locals and heritage advocates have been fighting to “save” the jardins du Trocadéro, the pont d'Iéna and the Champ-de-Mars.. The city’s project aims at remodeling, raising, narrowing the width of the Champ-de-Mars area with a “major” work budget involving about 120 million euros for a project “not wanted by Parisians”.
