Known for its role as a royal residence in the 14th century, the château served as a prison and was converted into barracks by Napoleon I. The fortress is still home to the Service historique de la Défense. In addition, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (National Monuments Center) offers visitors the chance to tour the King's apartments, the Sainte-Chapelle and even the upper sections of the Donjon, in a restored version!
