Heritage Days 2024 at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Saint-Cloud
Guided historical tour of the Bureau international des poids et mesures:
Nestled in its green setting on the heights of the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud, the Bureau international des poids et mesures (BIPM) is one of the oldest international organizations, and will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2025.
The Pavillon de Breteuil, inaugurated in 1672 by Louis XIV, was entrusted to the Bureau international at the time of its creation by the French government. While it remains a mythical place for a whole generation who learned at school that the BIPM is the guardian of the international prototypes of the metre and the kilogram, its missions have never ceased to evolve. Today, some one hundred States (64 Member States and 36 Associate States or Economies) participate in the activities of the BIPM, one of whose main missions is to coordinate the world's measurement system.
The BIPM is opening its doors to the public on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. Visitors will be offered a tour of the Pavillon de Breteuil and its formal gardens (Grand Parterre, nursery), as well as the BIPM's collection of antique instruments, enabling them to discover the great figures of science who have marked its history. Tours are available in small groups.
