As a new Health Defense Council is expected this Wednesday March 31, 2021, more and more people – specifically doctors – have been calling for tougher measures. So far, French President Macron has not decided yet.

As the vaccination campaign is escalating and despite the threats from variants, the government has decided on another strategy to curb the coronavirus epidemic, the executive has decided on local measures. But while the situation is deteriorating in some areas such as Île-de-France, local elected representatives, as well as doctors have been calling for harder measures.

A health defense council has been planned this Wednesday March 31 already in order to decide on new measures. In an interview with Journal du Dimanche, President Macron says that “for the coming days, we will look at the effectiveness of curbing measures and we will make those necessary if need be. But so far, nothing has been decided yet”.

Was the executive wrong not to call for another nationwide lockdown? “We made measure fitting the situation”, the President assures. “The scientific unanimity has never been met. And sometimes, facts from the day after come and counteract certainties from the day before. Some told us: ‘You’re heading straight for disaster’; we have not headed for disaster”.

As for closing schools, Macron once again says this is a last-resort- solution. Furthermore, he promises vaccinations will increase, enabling France to catch up the United Kingdom.
