For once, it snowed in November. Météo France has placed 31 départements under a "Neige, verglas et vents" (snow, ice and wind) orange alert this Friday, including Paris and the entire Ile-de-France region.
These low temperatures were caused by the arrival of storm Caetano. France and the Paris region spent a complicated day on the roads and in transport on Thursday. This meteorological phenomenon, caused by a low-pressure system crossing France from west to east, affects a vast band stretching from Brittany to the Alps, via the Île-de-France region.
Snowfall extended from Brittany and Normandy to Burgundy-Franche-Comté, as well as Corsica. Île-de-France saw between 1 and 10 centimetres of snow, a rare occurrence in the capital at this time of year.
The Préfecture de Police is calling for caution and has activated level 2 of the Snow and Ice Plan by limiting speed on the roads.
Snowfalls are complicating daily commutes, especially in icy conditions. Météo France warns of the high risks for road users, pointing out that even light snowfall can turn pavements into ice rinks. In town, the situation is not much easier, with flakes likely to turn to sheets of ice once the temperature rises.
This Friday, the alert concerns Aube, Calvados, Cher, Côte-d'Or, Doubs, Eure, Eure-et-Loir, Loir-et-Cher, Loiret, Manche, Haute-Marne, Mayenne, Nièvre, Orne, Haut-Rhin, Haute-Saône, Sarthe, Paris, Seine-Maritime, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Vosges, Yonne, Territoire de Belfort, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marneand Val-d'Oise.
In the Île-de-France region, this alert calls for heightened vigilance when traveling. Authorities are advising people to limit non-essential journeys, and to allow more time for travel. Municipal teams are on the alert to salt the main roads, but secondary roads could remain dangerous.
Whether you're in Paris or in neighboring départements such as Yvelines or Seine-et-Marne, we advise you to consult the Météo France alert map regularly and to be extremely cautious when travelling, or even to avoid taking the car if possible in certain départements where icy patches can be numerous.
