Île-de-France weather: an early cold snap and autumn before its time

Summer is drawing to a close in the Paris region, and the transition to autumn is shaping up to be brutal. From Wednesday, September 11, 2024, a marked drop in temperatures will set in across the region, bringing a foretaste of autumn several weeks earlier than usual. After a weekend of bad weather and thunderstorms, the weather begins to change radically.

There's plenty to be depressed about as we head back to school in 2024. After a rainy closing ceremony for the Paralympic Games, the next few days don't look much better.

The week of September 9 to 15, 2024 will be marked by the arrival of a polar air current, causing the mercury to plummet across the country. In the Île-de-France region, temperatures, still mild at the start of the week, will gradually drop to levels close to those usually observed on All Saints' Day. On Wednesday September 12, Météo France forecasts temperatures of between 7 and 9°C in the morning, with daytime highs not exceeding 16°C.

This drop in temperature is caused by a polar northwesterly flow, which will bring a mass of cold air over Western Europe, as meteorologist Yann Amice explains: " A descent of polar air is settling over the northern half of France. In the Île-de-France region, we can expect the thermometer to drop significantly from Wednesday, to levels rarely reached for early September " .

We're going to have to get out our sweaters and jackets sooner than expected, because autumn is already upon us, with temperatures hovering between 7 and 16°C during the day as early as Thursday. In the morning, the thermometer could fall to 6°C in some areas on Friday, values more reminiscent of late October than those of a still summery September. This thermal shock is all the more striking in that previous weeks have been marked by milder temperatures.

As autumn weather sets in, the Île-de-France region won't be the only one affected by this early cold. However, the region, already accustomed to rapid temperature variations, will this time see a lasting departure from seasonal normals. For those still hoping for a few sunny days, we'll probably have to wait until the weather improves, but current forecasts point to an early autumn.
