On January 23, 2024, the Parc Zoologique de Paris - or Zoo de Vincennes, whichever you prefer - welcomed two new residents. Indeed, a female armadillo gave birth to two six-banded armadillo babies, news that is as encouraging as it is cute for the most Parisian of zoos.
Since 2021, the mother armadillo has been living at the Zoological Park, following her transfer from Dortmund Zoo in Germany: two and a half years old, she gave birth to two tiny babies weighing barely 100 grams! To achieve this, the armadillo sets up a whole organization. Clinging to their mother, the baby armadillos are entirely dependent on her for the first month, before becoming more independent in their movements and being weaned.
The six-banded armadillo is a very solitary animal with a busy underground life: so, to try and catch a glimpse of the little armadillos born last January, you'll have to be patient when you visit and wait for them to emerge from their tunnels! Over the coming weeks, the zoo 's caretakers will be studying these little armadillos more closely to identify their sex, weight and other distinguishing characteristics. Keep an eye out for them on your next visit to the zoo!
