At the end ofApril 2024, a pair of red pandas will arrive at the Jardin des Plantes Menagerie, ushering in the grand return of this small mammal of the Ailuridae family, the last species not to become extinct on our planet.
The male was born at Krakow Zoo in Poland in July 2023: he will arrive at the Menagerie in mid-April, and will be joined a few days later by a female from Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland, where she was born in June 2023. The ultimate aim of this move is to enable the species to reproduce at the Jardin des Plantes Menagerie.
The red panda species, classified as endangered, benefits from a breeding and conservation program in European zoos, including the Jardin des Plantes Menagerie. Today, only 10,000 individuals remain in zoos (the number of individuals in the wild remains unknown). Its natural habitat is the mountain forests of Nepal, India, Bhutan, northern Myanmar and central China. Contrary to its name, the red panda is not related to the giant panda, an endangered species whose natural habitat is in China.
To see this little orange mammal in action at the Jardin des Plantes Menagerie, start in April!
