From January 2025, Île-de-France Mobilités is introducing a single €2.50 ticket for journeys on the metro, RER, trains and other modes of transport throughout the Paris region. The aim of this reform is to simplify fares for the 4 million occasional users, making the network easier to understand. Good news for some, bad news for others, we tell you all about it.

From January 1, 2025, a single €2.50 ticket will replace the various fares currently in force for metro, RER and regional train journeys throughout the Île-de-France region. This change is intended to put an end to the complexity of fares, particularly for travelers who use single tickets. Valérie Pécresse, President of Île-de-France Mobilités, describes this reform as a "ticketing revolution", in line with the dezoning of the Navigo pass already in place since 2015.

Within Paris, this will mean an increase in the current price from €2.15 to €2.50, as well as the disappearance of the ten-ticket booklet, which used to charge €1.73 for each journey. On the other hand, for users making longer journeys outside Paris, where OD ticket prices vary between €3.20 and €5, this reform represents a welcome reduction.

The aim is to make the fare system clearer and fairer for all Ile-de-France residents, whether they live in the center of Paris or in more remote areas. However, this reform will not only concern the metro and trains: buses and streetcars will also benefit from a fixed fare of €2 per journey, with a purchase directly from the driver set at €2.50 to dissuade users from this option.

One of the questions raised by this reform concerns its financing. According to Valérie Pécresse, the reform, although apparently costly (30 million euros in lost revenue per year), should be self-financing thanks to a slight increase in public transport ridership, estimated at between 1 and 2%. However, the political opposition expressed doubts about this promise of self-financing. Criticism has also been levelled at the fact that this measure was announced without prior consultation or debate within the Île-de-France Mobilités Board of Directors.

For regular users, the Liberté+ card is an attractive option. This pass, currently limited to the inner city of Paris, will be extended to the entire region, with even lower fares. A journey costing €2.50 will be charged €1.99 to cardholders, while the €2 bus ticket will cost €1.60. What's more, connections between the different modes of transport will be free of charge, providing substantial savings for those traveling long distances.

Although this reform does not benefit everyone equally, especially those who travel exclusively within Paris, it does represent a major simplification for journeys outside the capital.
