Like every other département in the Paris region, Val-de-Marne is preparing to host the Olympic torch relay. In 94, the date is Sunday July 21, 2024. And for this exceptional day, the département has thought big. The Val-de-Marne has planned an exceptional route highlighting its emblematic sites as well as sport, in a department that boasts no fewer than 15 national and even Olympic federations, 2,000 clubs and 260,000 members. As it's not every day that the flame passes through your department, it would be a shame not to admire and support the torchbearers as they go.
It's on Sunday, July 21, 2024 , that Val-de-Marne will shine internationally as it takes part in the Olympic Torch Relay, the emblematic event that precedes the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Here's the detailed route the flame will take through the département, marking a day rich in symbols and festivities:
- An international start at Paris-Orly airport: 8:20 a.m.
The Olympic flame will make its spectacular entrance into the Val-de-Marne at 8:20 a.m. at Paris-Orly airport, symbolizing the opening to the world and marking the start of its journey through the département.
- Château d'Ormesson: the historic site at 8.30am
After Orly, the flame will head for Château d'Ormesson, a historic site that bears witness to local architecture and history, before continuing through Chennevières, Saint-Maur and Champigny, highlighting the cultural heritage of these communes.
- Champigny Centre station: at 9:00 am
After a stopover at the Château d'Ormesson, the relay team heads for the north-west of the département to reach the future Champigny Centre station, an important point on the Grand Paris Express. Carnival with decorations and giant puppets, parade of sports associations, entertainment and big jump on the program.
- A gastronomic moment at Rungis Market: 10.35am to 10.55am:
The relay will make a significant stop at Rungis International Market. A giant breakfast, open on registration, will highlight French gastronomy, an essential part of the department's culture and economy. Activities will take place from 8 a.m., with a giant breakfast and brunch as an introduction.
- Château de Vincennes : 11.20 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
The flame makes a stop at the Château de Vincennes, where the Republican Guard and their horses, as well as musicians, will be on hand. The Paris fire department will also be on hand. A grand guard of honor, entertainment and an aperitif-guinguette on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville await you.
- Joinville river route: 12:30 to 12:38
Continuing its journey, the flame will pass through Vincennes, Fontenay-sous-Bois, Nogent, and finally Joinville, where it will board a rowing boat. This river segment along the Marne will highlight the department's water sports activities and its investment in making sports accessible to all. The torch relay will take place on the Quai de la Marne. Parades, music, capoeira, freestyle, entertainment and food trucks await you from 1pm to midnight.
- École Nationale Vétérinaire d'Alfort and Domaine de Grosbois: 12:38 pm to 2:00 pm
In mid-afternoon, the flame will reach the world-renownedÉcole Nationale Vétérinaire d'Alfort, followed by a visit to the Domaine de Grosbois. These sites illustrate the marriage of education, culture and nature that is key to the Val-de-Marne region. Sports activities for young and old, music and games are on the program.
- Domaine de Grobois: 2.35pm to 2.55pm
The flame passes through the vast wooded grounds of the Domaine de Grosbois, highlighting the château, its trotting museum and its equestrian center. A picnic open to all around the château, entertainment with Olympic workshops (pony christening, carriage rides, archery, climbing, breaking dance, adapted sports and inflatable structures), free visits to the château and museum from 3pm and a game to win one of 200 tickets to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- Visit to the Institut Gustave Roussy and the MAC VAL: 6:35 pm
The flame will also visit theInstitut Gustave Roussy, Europe's leading cancer treatment center, and the MAC VAL (Musée d'Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne), reflecting the region's artistic vitality. Sports activities for young and old, music and games await you. The museum will be open all day, with a new exhibition to be inaugurated that day, in partnership with the two basketball teams from Ivry-sur-Seine and Vitry-sur-Seine.
- The Hôtel du Département
The flame passes through the Hôtel du Département, the headquarters of the departmental council near the Créteil lake.
- Grand Finale in Créteil at the Maison de Handball: 7.20pm
The journey will end at 7.30pm in Créteil with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, a symbolic act of peace and unity. This will mark the end of an eventful day, which will have passed through a variety of emblematic sites, reflecting the diversity and richness of the Val-de-Marne region. Olympic carnival, entertainment on the esplanade and along the route await you.
