Although little known to the general public, it is not uncommon to find the fighting cane in literature and films, a weapon used since the late Middle Ages for self-defense. The streets of Paris being unsafe in the 19th century, the cane was democratized and presented at the1900 Universal Exhibition, then as a demonstration sport at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games, before becoming a combat sport in the late 1970s, developed by Maurice Sarry. To mark its centenary, theAssociation Sportive de Canne d'Arme will be highlighting the sport on Saturday, September 9, 2023.
The Town Hall of the 11th arrondissement of Paris is organizing its back-to-school Forum des associations, and the ASCA is offering you the opportunity to discover the French fighting stick and cane, during exceptional demonstrations. The ideal opportunity to observe this unusual sport, before taking up the sport for the coming year, perhaps at the Cour des Lions gymnasium? Practised with a cane, generally a 95cm-long chestnut stick, it consists in touching your opponent without being touched yourself, in the manner of fencing, for example.
