Every September, a very special parade takes to the streets of Paris. With its floats dedicated to electro music, the Techno Parade delights the ears of fans of House, Drum & Bass, Jungle, Acid Techno and Hardcore. 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of this event, which over the years has become a major cultural and musical rendezvous. While many people take the opportunity to let off steam to the frenzied sounds mixed by some of the biggest names on the electro scene, few actually know the origins and history of the Techno Parade. We tell you all about it.
It all began in 1997, when Jack Lang, former Minister of Culture, took part in the Love Parade in Berlin, Germany. Launched in July 1989, the primary aim of the event was to protest against the Berlin Wall, which cut the city in two. After the fall of the wall in November 1989, the Love Parade continued, gathering more and more participants each year. The event inspired Jack Lang. He was already behind the Fête de la Musique, and wanted to use the Love Parade as inspiration to create an event to promote electronic culture and de-demonize electro music, which was often the victim of prejudice.
Surrounded byHenri Maurel, founder of Radio FG and co-founder of Technopol, Jack Lang launched the first Techno Parade on September 19, 1998. It was an immediate success, with 200,000 people taking part in the first edition. The event also led to the drafting of an inter-ministerial circular recognizing the cultural aspect of techno.
From then on, the electro event was held every September in Paris, except in 2001, when the Techno Parade was cancelled following the September 11 attacks in the United States. With the health crisis, the event was also cancelled in 2020 and 2021.
The year 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of this festive electro event, which has already seen such prestigious artists as Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclar, David Guetta, Manu Le Malin, Laurent Garnier and Carl Cox parade on its floats.
Techno Parade in Paris: the electro parade will be cancelled in 2024
