Discover the textile art of Sheila Hicks at the Centre Pompidou, from February 7 to April 30, 2018. Little known to the public, textile art is an often forgotten part of art, between tapestry and sculpture.
For over 50 years now, Sheila Hicks has enjoyed sewing, tying and winding wool, linen and cotton threads to create works inherited from the Bauhaus and issues linked to Anti-form.
For this exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Sheila Hicks (who lives and works in Paris) revisits her entire career with dozens of sculptures assembled non-chronologically, offering an open-ended stroll through "a body of work exalting the life of colors, materials and forms", and as a counterpoint, several dozen Minimes, very small-format weavings that approach creation in a "laboratory" reproduced for the occasion.
On the second floor of the Centre Pompidou, you'll find over 80 incredible works and projects: giant balls of wool you'd like to dive into, vines of intertwined cotton threads, textile paintings, assemblages of cotton bags. The sheer size of the works, the shimmering colors and the interplay of textures are sure to make sewing and scrapbooking enthusiasts dream!
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
