When art raises awareness of the need to protect our planet... From February 21 to May 17, 2020, the Palais de Tokyo invites Parisians and other lovers of modern art to discover its brand new season, entitled Fragmenter le Monde (Fragmenting the World). The second part runs from June 19 to September 13, 2020.
At the heart of this new event are several exhibitions, such as Notre Monde Brûle, conceived in collaboration with MATHAF, the Museum of Modern Art in Doha, as well as the presentation of works by Kevin Rouillard, winner of the 2018 Sam pour l'art contemporain prize, and Nicolas Daubanes, winner of the 2018 Prix des Amis du Palais de Tokyo.
The first exhibition, Notre Monde Brûle, attempts to"heal Gaia's wounds and those of uprooted people at the time of the Capitalocene - this new geological era we have entered due to the intensity of our industrial modes of production -, in order to think differently about the world's future" thus explains Emma Lavigne, President of the Palais de Tokyo.
A multitude of works that"resonate in the urgency of our present, the poetic and emancipatory proposals of artists" seeking to heal these wounds, and which also offers"a committed look at contemporary creation from the Persian Gulf, where wars and diplomatic tensions have continued to determine the history of this early 21st century". An alarmist observation highlighted by artists such as John Akomfrah, Wael Shawky, Mustapha Akrim, Francis Alÿs, Kader Attia, Mounira Al Solh, Sophia Al Maria, Yto Barrada, Aslı Çavuşoğlu, Dominique Hurth, Amal Kenawy, Amina Menia, Michael Rakowitz and Younes Rahmoun.
The other two exhibitions, focusing on the work of Kevin Rouillard and Nicolas Daubanes, plunge visitors into the world of metal salvaging for the creation of artworks, while the latter questions confinement and its physical and psychological consequences. Two universes that come together in this question of the "fragmentation of the world", in its approach to nature and the human. Shall we go, folks?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
