Dans la mémoire du monde, Philippe Echaroux’s spectacular installation in Quai Branly garden

Philippe Echaroux and the Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac shine a light on the Paiter Suruí Amazonian people. In the museum garden, an installation plays the portraits of this people from Brazil on the trees’ leaves. Called “Dans la mémoire du monde”, this beautiful ephemeral work is to be discovered for free from the rue de l’Université and the Quai Branly, or for the museum’s late-night openings on Thursdays, by walking around the gardens. Careful, the installation is only visible from October 1 to 31, 2020.

Photographer Philippe Echaroux met the Paiter Suruí, a people living in the Amazonian forest, Brazil. From this extraordinary trip, he brought many memories he makes us discover thanks to an installation of lights, lighting up at dusk and until midnight all October long.

Portraits of the inhabitants of Amazonia are drawn on the leaves of the trees and raise awareness about the dangers threatening their lifestyle and lands. In Brazil, the deforestation of Amazonia is increasing by 25%, a sad record worrying the Paiter Suruí.

A few surprises expect you in addition to this light installation. On Thursdays October 1, 15, 22 and 29, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., a sound immersion welcomes you as soon as you get in: songs recorded at Paiter Suruí’s by the photographer and sounds recorded in the heart of the Amazonian forest in the 1990’s by musician Bernie Krause, taking you to a unique atmosphere.

Moreover, discover “Flash Amazonie” a display of Amazonian items in the museum’s permanent collections, as well as movie screenings, a reading followed by a debate, and two meetings scheduled with Philippe Echaroux, coming for the inauguration of his art installation.
