If you're a fan of the Age of Enlightenment and painting, you'll want to visit the Musée Cognacq-Jay this winter. The Parisian institution is presenting an exceptional exhibition in its permanent collections, dedicated to the art of pastel. From October 12, 2023 to February 11, 2024, come and admire Pastels, between line and color.
This exhibition showcases some of the museum's masterpieces. In the 18th century, pastels enjoyed their golden age: they were highly prized by portraitists, who found them a very useful tool for capturing the textures, colors and light that gave their models their uniqueness. These qualities enable them to create highly realistic and captivating paintings.
During the Age of Enlightenment, two renowned draftsmen rivaled each other in talent. The Musée Cognacq-Jay exhibits works by Maurice-Quentin de La Tour, the " prince of pastelists ", Jean-Baptiste Perronneau, François Boucher and Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, artists whose reputation and expertise are well established. English pastelists are also featured in this exhibition.
Pastel is a stick made of colored pigments. It is used in drawing and painting for its many advantages: it offers a highly nuanced palette of colors, it adds texture and depth to a painting, and it quickly captures the emotions of subjects... Above all, pastels retain their intensity, even after centuries.
The Musée Cognacq-Jay is therefore unveiling a number of pastel paintings, telling the story of both the evolution of artistic techniques and the importance of intimate portraiture during the Enlightenment. Don't miss this exhibition, which allows you to (re)discover the museum's collections at the same time!
