The Louvre goes fashion! From January 24, 2025, the Louvre, the undisputed temple of classical art, will reinvent itself as a prestigious catwalk by devoting an exhibition entirely to fashion. For the first time in its history, the famous Parisian museum, often associated with masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa or the Venus de Milo, will shine the spotlight on this often marginalized art form within its walls. Until now, only a few major fashion houses have had the honor of staging shows there during Fashion Week.
Running until July 21, 2025, this groundbreaking fashion exhibition will create a dialogue between the treasures of the Louvre, from the Byzantine era to the French Second Empire, and the creations of the biggest names in fashion. According to WWD, the museum will unveil around 65 emblematic outfits and 30 accessories by iconic couturiers such as Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Yohji Yamamoto, and Dolce & Gabbana, as well as contemporary pieces by young talents. A special tribute will be paid to Marie-Louise Carven, a Parisian fashion pioneer and art collector who donated a hundred 18th-century French objets d'art to the Louvre in 1973.
More good news: the scenography will be orchestrated by Nathalie Crinière, responsible for the marvellous staging ofIris Van Herpen's cabinet of curiosities,Elsa Schiaparelli 's gilding at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and the Galerie Dior. His innovative, immersive approach promises to sublimate the interaction between fashion and art.
It's precisely this interaction that Olivier Gabet, director of the Louvre's Objets d'Art department, encourages: "Today, I think fashion is even more interesting when it's presented in relation to other fields. When you talk to a designer, he or she talks about fashion, of course, but also about art, crafts and photography, " Vanity Fair quoted him as saying.
This exhibition will not only mark a first for the Louvre, but could also be the beginning of a new tradition, strengthening the link between haute couture and classical art. Lovers of fashion and art can look forward to a unique experience in Paris, at the heart of the world's most prestigious museum.
