Head for the Batignolles district, to discover Mamma Andrea's Italian brunch . This address, which opened discreetly a year ago, is the home of Fils à Maman. For Andrea, he wanted a breath of fresh air, and Italian cuisine was the answer.
Fresh produce and a welcoming restaurant are a winning combination. With its antique decor of knick-knacks, hand-painted carafes, comfortable banquettes and wooden tables, the place is really cosy and offers a real break in Paris. A sun-protected terrace on a quiet street means you can even take advantage of the fine weather!
On Sunday lunchtime,Andrea's opening time, we take a seat on the terrace and are presented with two menus: the classic menu and the brunch menu. We're here to try out the brunch menu, but it's a pleasant surprise to see that not everyone at the table is forced to have coffee and croissants for breakfast.
The brunch menu is simple: a burrata, scrambled eggs with charcuterie, a bread and croissant set or a dessert from the menu (your choice) and the traditional hot drinks and fruit juices, all for 26 euros. You can add truffles to the eggs or burrata for an extra 5 euros.
Mamma Andrea's team is very friendly; it's possible to have stracciatella instead of burrata (both products are the same price) and vegetarians can have pasta or vegetables instead of cold cuts, so it'll be eggs with truffle, stracciatela and parmigiana. We opt for a set of viennoiseries and a dessert, to be shared by two!
The order is placed, the viennoiseries arrive in 5 minutes, but we wait until the table is full to take the photo. Then, 10 minutes later, it's time for delivery. The little tray with burrata, eggs and accompaniment arrives, and we're won over by the sight alone. So much so that we forget about the pannacotta, which arrives 5 minutes later. Now it's time to taste it all!
The burrata is melt-in-the-mouth, and the stracciatella even more so (as it should be, it's the cream of the burrata). They've provided gressini to accompany the cheeses, but we don't need them. I add a little salt to the straciatella, but it needs fleur de sel to intensify its taste and make it perfect.
The eggs are well cooked, but still a little slushy. Having both versions, with and without truffle, the truffle really adds something. The quantity is just right to enjoy the whole meal. We can switch from eggs to burrata without a care, but if charcuterie is a "logical" accompaniment for an Italian brunch versionof the traditional eggs and bacon, our favorite is this parmigiana, a killer with its crunchy cheese crust. The eggplants are very well seasoned, with just the right amount of tomato to ensure they cook but don't go soggy.
After a short break, we happily attack the pannacotta, very melting and not too sweet. We happily share this dessert, but those with a sweet tooth can order a tiramisu or a chocolate fondant with mascarpone, à la carte at 8 euros.
The verdict? The brunch is very well thought-out, and the manager's understanding in adapting the brunch to your needs or desires is very pleasant. We leave happy, our bellies not too full, ready to tackle the afternoon!
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
