There are no surprises at Sürpriz: here, kebabs are made the Berlin way. Born between Paris and Berlin, Sürpriz has been serving doner lovers in Oberkampf for 5 years, using Kadir Nurman's authentic recipe, enhanced with fresh vegetables and homemade ingredients.
Now also open in Strasbourg Saint-Denis and recently in Bastille, all three locations are packed to the rafters, and it's a good idea to get there early to avoid the wait for your kebab. It has to be said that the real ones know what they're doing, and don't make any mistake.
At the helm of the three establishments are two Germans who moved to Paris from their native Berlin , bringing with them a desire to introduce Parisians to genuine Berlin kebab. The Sürpriz recipe was developed in collaboration with real kebab makers, in particular Mehmet, the Berlin butcher who supplies the famous Mustapha Gemüse Kebab.
Inside, handmade breads and patties, baked once and then toasted with homemade herb butter, 100% chicken meat, carefully grilled and caramelized on a spit, Greek feta cheese and ultra-fresh vegetables - peppers, eggplant, carrots, zucchini, romaine and arugula lettuce, red and white cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, mint and parsley - replace the traditional and basic salad-tomato-onion trio.
It's even possible to opt for a 100% vegetarian version, or a kebab with halloumi, the famous grilled cheese that tickles your teeth.
As for sauces, one of the basic elements of a quality kebab, forget the Algerian or Samurai sauces; here, you'll find only the three essential sauces of German kebabs: Kräuter sauce (fine herbs), Knoblauch sauce (garlic) and Scharf sauce (hot), all homemade.
Prices: €7.60 for a döner kebab, €8.50 for a dürüm kebab and €10.50 for a kebab and fries. Accompanied by a bottle of Club Mate, Fritz Kola or Apfelschorle, you'll feel right at home in Berlin!
