Is the 6th arrondissement becoming one of the new must-visit areas for all lovers of Asian specialties? After Mille & Un and La Maison du Mochi, there is a new temple of gourmet food, this time featuring the sando. This famous Japanese sandwich, which seems to have made its way into the capital and into the hearts of Parisians, continues to be emulated. The latest trendy address dedicated to this Japanese dish is called Benchy.
Nestled in the rue du Cherche-Midi, this little shop didn't take long to seduce the taste buds of the locals, and even beyond. Opened at the end of 2021, Benchy focuses on simplicity without compromising on quality, with first of all a refined and bright decoration (natural marble, vintage seats...). We appreciate the scraped walls and exposed pipes, which give an unfinished, but modern look.
At Benchy, which has more than a dozen seats, the service and the welcome are irreproachable. A perfect atmosphere to discover a short but effective menu, where the famous sandos are honored, in salted and sweet version.
Among the best-sellers, we find the unavoidable tamago sando (egg, Japanese mayo, yuzu paste) or the one with pastrami. A tuna sando is also proposed, without forgetting the wagyu beef sando (to be ordered the day before for the next day). The homemade bread is crispy as it should be. The seasoning is just right and the balance of flavors is perfect.
For the fruit sandwiches, filled with mascarpone and whipped cream, several choices are available: clementine, kiwi, banana or the inevitable strawberry sando... pieces of fruit are delicately slipped between two soft slices of sandwich bread. It is undeniable, we fall back in childhood!
And to accompany these sandos, Benchy - which is also an excellent coffee shop - offers a selection of hot drinks, including an excellent matcha latte that we highly recommend. Otherwise, opt for a flat white, a hôjicha latte or a sencha tea. Beers and wines are also on the menu.
Some homemade desserts are also to be tried urgently, including the excellent matcha cake, topped with whipped cream, or a cookie flavored with Hôjicha tea without forgetting a banana bread.
Behind this new gourmet address, we find Kaito Hori, a designer and consultant, already at the origin of Sanjo, a ramen bar located in the 1st district of Paris. With Benchy, Kaito Hori offers us a fabulous new trip to the land of the Rising Sun!
