Despite the progression of the coronavirus epidemic, Île-de-France has escaped weekend confinement until now. But as the region's incidence rate passed the decisive milestone of 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants this Monday, March 15, 2021, Paris and all Ile-de-France residents could find themselves confined again as early as this week.

WillParis and theÎle-de-France region have to comply with weekend confinement from Saturday, March 20, 2021? This Sunday, March 14, 2021, Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Twitch the decisive criterion: if the region exceeded an incidence rate of more than 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, then Île-de-France residents could in turn be affected by this measure already in place in Alpes-Maritimes, Dunkerque as well as the whole of Pas-de-Calais.

This Sunday, invited on Twitch by Samuel Etienne, Jean Castex opened up. The Prime Minister explained for instance that Île-de-France was not subject to the same restrictions as Pas-de-Calais and Alpes-Maritimes, because the incidence rate has not reached 400 cases for 100,000 inhabitants. Since Monday March 15, 2021, the Paris region has exceeded the rate of 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In detail, as of Tuesday March 16, 2021, the incidence rate for the Île-de-Fance region was 418.9. Five départements have passed the 400 cases per 100,000 population mark: Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Val d'Oise, Seine et Marne and Essonne have incidence rates of 499.3, 458.9, 496.0, 436.5 and 400.4 respectively. Next come Paris (397.8), Hauts-de-Seine (356.9) and Yvelines (320.7).

So why weren't weekend confinement automatically ordered in departments exceeding 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants? The case of the Paris region is special: during the debate on a possible strict three-week confinement of the capital, the executive announced its intention to apply measures throughout the region, rather than by department. In the Île-de-France region, the mobility of residents is such that restrictions can hardly be targeted on a departmental scale. As a result, certain measures in Paris, such as the requirement to wear a mask outdoors, have been extended to the inner suburbs.

It should also be noted that weekend confinement may not be the only option. Departments under reinforced surveillance are said to be at risk of tighter restrictions if the health situation worsens. New measures could then be taken in the Île-de-France region.
