Which RER do you think is the most behind schedule? According to the Cour des Comptes, whose report was published on Wednesday, urban trains in the Ile-de-France region are much less punctual than expected, and much more crowded.

According to the Cour des Comptes, RER punctuality is a far cry from RATP and SNCF reports. In a report published on Wednesday, we discover the state of Ile-de-France transport, and in particular of theÎle-de-Franceregional express network, which serves Paris and its conurbation, on the five lines concerned. Find out which RER is the most late, the busiest and the most on-time!

Only RER A stands out. In 2022, it will enjoy a punctuality rate of 94.4%, far higher than on lines B and D, which are of particular concern to the Cour des Comptes. These two lines combine"heavy traffic, mediocre punctuality rates and a foreseeable increase in ridership", with on-time train rates of 85.7% and 86.6% respectively. Some sections are more affected than others, due to construction work or regular operating difficulties, notably north of the RER B.

Line punctuality

  1. RER A: 94.4%
  2. RER E: 93.4% PUNCTUALITY
  3. RER C: 89.4%
  4. RER D: 86.6% PUNCTUALITY
  5. RER B: 85.7% PUNCTUALITY
In Europe, the RER is one of the urban rail networks lagging furthest behind Copenhagen, Berlin and Madrid, but ahead of London. However, it's important to bear in mind the special nature of transport in the Paris region, as Paris is one of the world's most densely populated capitals. In terms of ridership, RER trains saw an increase in use of between 5% and 12.5% between 2014 and 2019, before the Covid crisis. The RER A is the busiest, with 1.4 million passengers a day, ahead of the RER B, Europe's busiest! Only Tokyo, Mumbai and Sao Paulo see more users worldwide.

Ridership by line

  • RER A: 1.4 million daily journeys
  • RER B: 983,000
  • RER D: 660,000
  • RER C: 540,000
  • RER E: 350,000
