Fancy seeing some new sports at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games? Good thing we are! This Thursday, the Paris 2024 organizing committee officially announced four new disciplines as guest sports on the program of the future Olympic Games. The organizers are making a point of innovating by proposing disciplines that are, to say the least... improbable!
With the fierce determination to make these Olympic Games "revolutionary Games", disciplines such as surfing, climbing, skateboarding and breakdancing are now officially registered as guest disciplines, and will participate in the same way as the 28 other disciplines already present. However, given the limited number of places (10,500) available, team sports have very little chance of being included in the list of invited sports. The other condition for these guest disciplines to appear on the program is that they do not require additional facilities. In the case of surfing, for example, cities such as Biarritz and Hossegor are already planning to host the discipline together.
Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, justifies this choice as these sports "meet three criteria: they do not require the construction of additional venues with a limited number of athletes, they speak to new generations and they respond to the identity of Paris 2024". So many criteria that should move the lines in terms of the Olympic Games program, which must renew itself with each edition to match the era of the times.
