Helldivers 2, a cooperative shooter by Arrowhead Game Studios, offers a whole host of game mechanics, opening the way to various strategies that each player can implement to spread democracy. But there are also a number of implicit rules and behaviours that have been established, naturally for players and by players, to ensure that your games run smoothly. What are these best practices? Let's find out!

Helldivers 2, the latest video-game nugget from Arrowhead Game Studios, plunges players into an unforgiving universe where cooperation is king. Since its release on February 8, the game has captivated a committed community, quick to define a set of unspoken rules essential to the smooth running of games. This cooperative shooter invites you to battle fearsome giant insects and terrifying automatons, in an environment where "friendly fire" is an integral part of the gameplay. Care must therefore be taken both in shooting and in deploying drop pods, lest you turn your allies into collateral victims.

The Helldivers 2 community, very active on networks such as Reddit and Discord, has therefore embarked on the elaboration of tacit rules within the cooperative game, promoting the best practices to be adopted. Some of these rules seem obvious, such as not obstructing your teammates' line of fire, or being discerning in the placement of stratagems, whose zone effects can be as deadly as they are effective. Less intuitive, but just as crucial, are recommendations to share ammunition when resupplying, or to reload your weapon before grabbing a resource pack, with a view to preserving group harmony and efficiency.

The implicit rules of Helldivers 2 are not limited to simple courtesy in combat; they also aim to counter toxic behavior that could harm the collective experience. For example, stealing a comrade's equipment without his or her consent is strongly discouraged, while samples collected by your compatriots must be collected (samples are divided equally between the whole team at the end of the game). Strategic positioning of turrets to avoid fratricidal fire and judicious management of respawn are key to maintaining a positive group dynamic. The distinction between accidental friendly fire and intentional teamkilling is crucial, too, the latter practice being particularly frowned upon within the community, except to save a game, when teamkilling (at least part of the team) is part of a more global strategy, as PassageLongjumping24 explains on Reddit.

With a million copies already sold, the dazzling success of this title on PC and PS5 testifies to its potential to federate a solid community around a demanding yet rewarding gaming experience. In this Starship Troopers-inspired universe, learning to navigate between order and anarchy, the serious and the absurd, is the key to survival and prosperity. That's why these unspoken rules have been put in place. We invite you to follow them... At your controls!
