A multi-talented artist, Matthieu Laurette likes to use the media and social networks to disseminate his art, play on audiovisual codes and hijack programs. A jack-of-all-trades and a free spirit, Matthieu Laurette looks back on a 30-year career in a retrospective exhibition at MAC/VAL, the Val-de-Marne museum of contemporary art.
From October 21, 2023 to March 3, 2024, come and discover the Rétrospective dérivée, an original exhibition featuring numerous works by the artist.
Videos, sculptures, installations, photographs, Apparitions, interventions, contracts, works on paper... We discover a wide selection of Matthieu Laurette's creations over the years, starting with his Apparitions. In 1993, as a young student, the artist took part in the TV show"Tournez manège!" on TF1. Matthieu Laurette used this television appearance to promote himself to friends and colleagues.
From then on, the artist found a variety of ways to use the systems and institutions in place to his advantage. Television programs, newspapers and reports, as well as advertisements and marketing operations: the Frenchman acquires widespread renown by playing with the rules, the better to denounce bad practices. Matthieu Laurette's creations question three principles: the circulation of money, images and art.
The various works on display tell the story of these commitments, these reflections, these unusual performances... In an original way. Even in a museum, the artist can't resist breaking codes: several works are "derived", reinvented, requestioned. Missing pieces are brought to light, old installations are reappraised... The works and collections continue to live and evolve in this ever-changing retrospective.
Alongside this exhibition, Matthieu Laurette also presents his Drinks by collection, an archive that recovers and highlights original artistic labels for alcoholic beverages. On bottles of wine, beer or liqueur, you can find the talent of a Paul Gauguin, a Ben, a Yoko Ono, a Joan Miró... The artist unveils his impressive collection of decorated bottles, cans and labels.
Two newexhibitions to discover Matthieu Laurette's astonishing universe. We're off to the MAC/VAL!
