Contemporary art lovers, here's an exhibition to pique your curiosity! Lafayette Anticipations invites you to explore the future and its probabilities with thegroup exhibition Coming Soon, from February 28 to May 12, 2024. The exhibition is characterized by a deep reflection on our relationship with the future, a universal and ever topical theme.
In an age where uncertainty seems to reign, Coming Soon offers a space to think, dream, predict and even fear what lies ahead. The exhibition brings together both contemporary and historical works, looking at different ways of anticipating and experiencing the unknown. Inspired by Barbara Kruger 's dictum that"the future belongs to those who can see it", this exhibition invites us to question what our visions of the future reveal about our present.
Coming Soon unfolds along a rich and varied thematic path. At the entrance, Rirkrit Tiravanija's Untitled (Demain est la question) welcomes visitors with an interactive ping-pong table, symbolizing dialogue and encounter. The tour then begins with a stele dedicated to the Egyptian god Ptah, on loan from the Louvre, evoking the need to listen to human hopes and desires for the future.
Theexhibition continues by exploring the role of oracles and divinatory tools, with works by artists such as Alexandru Chira and Chino Amobi, linking past, present and future. Subsequent sections present premonitory works by artists such as Neïl Beloufa and Emma Kunz, as well as reflections on the " test of time ", with creations by Clovis Bataille and Sung Tieu. We particularly appreciate Johann Heinrich Füssli's Tiresias appears to Ulysses during the sacrifice, or the Simpsons ' work on their "famous predictions", often confirmed and excerpted here.
In its final section, Coming Soon tackles more introspective themes. The " inhabiting the future " section highlights the highly personal nature of our relationship with the future, with contributions from artists such as Christine Sun Kim and John Akomfrah. The " preventing the future " section presents different strategies for anticipating potential catastrophes, with works by George Widener and Stéphanie Brossard.
Finally, theexhibition closes on the theme of " admission ", an invitation to accept fate and randomness, illustrated by sculptures by Bridget Polk and a Mallarmé quotation presented by Cerith Wyn Evans.
A fine invitation to rethink our relationship with time and the future, a subject more relevant than ever. Mark your calendars!
