To all fans of Comté, Camembert, goat's cheese, Morbier, Saint-Nectaire and even Maroilles... the Musée du Fromage has opened its doors in Paris. Since June 13, 2024, the capital has welcomed its first cheese museum to the heart ofIle-Saint-Louis in the 4th arrondissement. Spearheaded by the Paroles de Fromagers company and its founder Pierre Brisson, this one-of-a-kind project in Paris aims to celebrate France's rich cheese heritage and its artisans.
As we enter, we see Ava,t a whole store with a window full of the kind of cheeses we love. Here, we can stock up on a variety of cheeses from all over France. Further down the aisle, the museum tour begins, with the cow, my goat and the ewe watching us.
The Musée du Fromage offers total immersion in the world of cheese, with an interactive exhibition gallery, educational areas and even a dairy where cheese is produced before our very eyes. The aim is twofold: to introduce visitors to the riches of the French terroir, and to inspire young people to take up careers in the industry, where there is a shortage of applicants. You can discover all the PDO cheeses, linked to their place of production. A kiosk allows us to discover them in greater detail, and even to find the producers where they can be found. You can even select them and send them to yourself for your next visit to the region.
The museum is organized as an educational tour that begins with the culture of cheese, continues with the secrets of its manufacture and ends on a gourmet note with an immersive tasting. Yes, we love this part of the experience! Each stage is designed to highlight the caseology, ancestral know-how and unrivalled diversity of French cheeses. Accessible to young and old alike, learning is fun and interactive. You'll learn how cheese is formed, and even how a cheese profile characterizes you (yes, yes!). My colleague and I have a Reblochon and a Sainte Maure de Touraine...
In addition to its role as a cultural showcase, the Musée du Fromage aims to play an active role in addressing the challenges facing the industry, in particular the lack of interest among young people in the cheese-making professions. By offering an interactive and educational space, the museum hopes to renew the link between city-dwellers and cheese-producing regions, and inspire a new generation of cheese-makers.
Located on the premises of the former "Nos Ancêtres Les Gaulois" restaurant, the museum aims to become an essential meeting place for cheese lovers, the curious and professionals alike. With this opening, Paris reinforces its status as world capital of tourism and gastronomy, by offering a new space dedicated to one of its finest culinary traditions.
This project was conceived and produced by Paroles de Fromagers. This company, founded at the end of 2013, has been devoting its efforts to passing on cheese-making knowledge and know-how for over ten years. Pierre Brisson, the company's founder, has spent fifteen years developing this project. Born into a family of Beaujolais winegrowers and trained in cheese-making at the ENIL in Aurillac, this enthusiast now heads an enthusiastic team of around ten people, all united by the desire to share their passion for good cheeses with as many people as possible.
The museum is located at 39 rue Saint-Louis en l'Ile in the 4th arrondissement. You can get there by metro, Saint-Paul station on line 1 and Pont-Marie on line 7. Tickets are already on sale, and cost €20 for adults, €17 for 12-17 year-olds and €13 for 5-11 year-olds.
In short, it smells good around here, doesn't it? Or not... but we can't wait to discover, dive in, learn and taste cheeses from all our regions.
