What is the relationship between the individual and the group? How is the "I" created in the eyes of others, and what projections and constructions are involved?
Christian Falsnaes uses and questions his identity as an artist, male, white, heterosexual, and as an individual in relation to the group, the community. His art consists of uniting audiences in performances, often filmed. He guides the process, sometimes as seducer, sometimes as facilitator, provocateur or disciplinarian; with clear instructions, he leads his co-actors to do things that push them into new spaces of experience between obedience and efus.
He explains: "In my work, it's often a question of making the audience the material of the work... By perceiving oneself as a work of art, I think it allows an analytical and reflective approach to one's own reaction and behavior, which one wouldn't normally have..."
For his new work "I", MOI in French, he invites Parisians to join him on September 19 at 7pm. Everyone is welcome for an installation that will be filmed during the opening; the artist plans to create two large fabric collages in a simple scenography, made of fabric suspended from the ceiling and an iron fence dividing the room in two!
Alongside this work, the artist also plans to show a selection of graffiti from the WRITERS UNITED AGAINST THE GREY series, created in Berlin. Why this graffiti? Because the graffiti artists each write their own name, in a declaration of self (I'm here), but these names/declarations blend together in large-scale collective murals, where each person becomes small parts of a whole.
