When Mauritian art settles in the heart of Montmartre... From September 11, 2024 to January 19, 2025, La Halle Saint Pierre hosts an exhibition devoted to Mauritian artist Malcolm de Chazal. The exhibition highlights the poetic and pictorial work of Malcolm de Chazal, considered one of the leading figures inMauritian art and literature. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Blue Penny Museum in Port Louis, invites visitors to discover a world where nature, spirituality and cosmogony blend harmoniously.

Renowned for his creative duality, Malcolm de Chazal distinguished himself not only as a painter, but also as a poet acclaimed by such major literary figures asAndré Breton, Georges Bataille and Léopold Sédar Senghor. The latter saw in him a unique creative force, describing his work as " a geyser of sap, a torrent of lava, a bush of metaphors ". Theexhibition highlights this singularity, presenting works that capture the very essence of Chazal's vision: a quest for lost paradise, where man and nature coexist in profound harmony.

The works on show, mainly gouaches produced from 1962 onwards, reveal Malcolm de Chazal 's distinctive approach to painting. The two-dimensional space and vivid colors he uses create a perspective that transcends traditional forms, offering an immersive visual experience. As the artist himself points out: " I create a perspective through colors... so the image, instead of sinking into the painting, goes out of the painting and towards the viewer ". This exhibition is an invitation to explore a world where the curves of the Mauritian mountains meet the rounded forms of the dodo, in a peaceful, timeless universe.
