Masterpieces from the Galleria Borghese: the Jacquemart-André museum's Italian exhibition unveiled

Raphael, Titian, Veronese, Caravaggio, Rubens, Botticelli, Bernini... Do these names ring a bell? These great masters of art have crossed the centuries, and are part of the collections of the Galerie Borghèse. The Musée Jacquemart-André and the Galerie Borghèse are joining forces to organize an exceptional exhibition in Paris, from September 6, 2024 to January 5, 2025.

For its reopening in September 2024, the Musée Jacquemart-André will be presenting some forty masterpieces from the collections of the Galerie Borghèse in Rome. This unprecedented partnership showcases key works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

In the 17th century, the Villa Borghese Pinciana was built to house the art collection of Cardinal Scipio Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V. The powerful Italian churchman wanted to build a Roman-style palace surrounded by gardens. A luxurious setting to showcase the paintings and sculptures in his collection. Through his tastes, curiosity and education, Scipio Borghese was able to assemble some of the finest masterpieces by the artists of his time. The Villa (now the Gallery) was a veritable temple to art, and a symbol of Italy's economic and cultural power.

The Musée Jacquemart-André is hosting a selection of works from this collection, which focuses on Italian and Nordic artists of the 16th and 17th centuries. These include famous artists such as those mentioned above, as well as lesser-known painters and sculptors such as Annibal Carracci, Guido Reni, Le Cavalier d'Arpin and Jacopo Bassano.

With each new room, you can't help but marvel at these exceptional, brilliantly colored paintings. We recognize the hand of the great masters of Italian painting, and also discover some unjustly little-known works. The sober scenography gives pride of place to these exceptional masterpieces.
