The Palais de Tokyo is hosting a most unusual exhibition... Entitled Les Frontières sont des animaux nocturnes/Sienos yra naktiniai gyvūnai, it awaits you from October 17, 2024 to January 5, 2025. This ambitious project is co-organized with KADIST Paris and the Centre d'Art Contemporain de Vilnius, as part of the Saison de la Lituanie en France. Through this exhibition, Lithuanian artists and their counterparts from so-called "post-socialist" countries explore the often forgotten or obscured narratives of Eastern Europe, while posing a crucial question: how can current geopolitical upheavals reshape our perceptions of past and present?
Borders are nocturnal animals/Sienos yra naktiniai gyvūnai takes its title from an essay by Luba Jurgenson, When We Woke Up, which evokes theinvasion of Ukraine in 2022. " Borders are nocturnal animals, moving while we sleep. We should always be watching," writes Jurgenson, underlining the fragility of borders and the unpredictability of conflicts. This context of war, particularly in Ukraine, is central to this exhibition, which highlights the impact of invasions on regional histories and the resilience of societies.
The works presented question not only geopolitical realities, but also the belief systems and languages that shape cultural identities. Featuring artists such as Andrius Arutiunian and Emilija Škarnulytė, theexhibition covers a wide range of themes, from spirituality to natural resources. Energy, whether spiritual or material, is depicted as a key factor in understanding contemporary political and environmental dynamics.
Enriched by imagination and poetry, this exhibition is intended as a genuine political tool for revisiting post-colonial narratives and offering a new vision of the future, imbued with traditional practices deeply rooted in nature. Let's drop by the Palais de Tokyo?
