Tired of the traditional French pastries? Looking for something new and original? Head to Kaffeehaus. Nestled in the heart of the Marché Poncelet in Paris 17th arrondissement, this very lovely and indulging house gives pride of place to Germany and Eastern Europe, with several savory offerings – simple yet mouthwatering – as well as a large and delicious sweet range.
Behind this institution stands Ralf Edeler. This German chef is a genuine globe-trotter, willing to make you discover the indulging memories of his childhood. After starting at home on the other side of the Rhine (Möenchen Gladbach), Ralf trains in London at Frères Roux and Harrod’s, as well as in Brussels at Wittamer, and even in Paris at Fauchon alongside Pierre Hermé, and then Potel et Chabot. He eventually chose the City of Lights to settle down and open Kaffeehaus in 2013, in the exact same place where used to stand Stübli.
Kaffeehaus bets on generosity and sharing. You only have to look at the impressive pastries standing in the window. We have to say Germans usually buy slices of different cakes instead of one-serving entremets. Poppy-seed and Morello cherry cakes, fig cakes, kaese sahne, poppy seed rolls, Gugelhupf… The choice is very wide and super-mouthwatering.
We ultimately go for the incredible and authentic Black Forest Gateau, a house’s classic. And you have to try it! It will tickle your taste buds because of the chocolate cake, the slightly kirsch-marinated and sour Morello cherries, and the whipped cream!
If you are more into classic and regressive flavors, close your eyes and order the Ecureuil, based on chocolate and crunchy hazelnuts.
Still hungry? Craving for more? Kaffeehaus also supplies the delicious Edelweiss based on almond cake and blackcurrant chips, crispy meringue, kirsch whipped cream, chestnut vermicelli for even more indulgence.
And what about the Beaumont? Another house’s classic that Ralf’s son ate all along his childhood. This cake will delight even the most demanding taste buds with the chocolate dacquoise cake, the ginger crème brulée, oven-roasted apple cooked in calvados.
One thing is sure, after tasting one of the many delicious pastries by Kaffeehaus, this staple place in Paris 17th arrondissement will become your new indulging HQ!
