The Fête de la Lune returns this Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Here's a list of the best places in Paris to enjoy a delicious Moon Cake.
Known as Zhong Qiu Jie in Chinese, Tết Trung Thu in Vietnamese or chūshū setsu in Japanese, this festival celebrates family reunion and the admiration of the moon at its peak. This celebration is traditionally accompanied by the tasting of the famous mooncakes (yue bing or bánh nướng). Paris, a cosmopolitan city par excellence, offers some great places to discover or sample these lunar delights.
For the record, the tradition of mooncakes dates back to the Tang dynasty. The story goes that these sweets were used to secretly transmit the signal for the Han Chinese revolt against the Yuan Mongol dynasty, a landmark event that led to the rise of the Ming. These coded messages were hidden inside these pastries, reserved exclusively for Hans consumption. Today, these pastries represent harmony and reunion. This deeply-rooted but modernized tradition is expressed in sweet and savory mooncakes in a variety of shapes and flavors. Traditionally filled with lotus cream, red bean paste or a mixture of five nuts, they now come in iced or chocolate versions, as well as mochi.
Tasting mooncakes is a true cultural and sensory journey, best enjoyed with a cup of tea, in keeping with tradition. Although industrial versions are gaining ground, the quest for traditional mooncakes remains a gourmet treasure to be discovered. That's why we've given priority to artisanal production in this selection for the Moon Festival in Paris. We invite you to discover them in the company of your loved ones, in keeping with tradition.
