Why are some service stations in Paris no longer allowed to sell diesel?

As of October 1, 2024, certain service stations on the outskirts of the capital and on the ring road are no longer allowed to sell diesel! But why was this measure introduced?

After the 50 km/h speed limit on the Paris ring road and the soon-to-be reserved carpool lane, now four service stations can no longer sell diesel to motorists! Since October 1, 2024, the TotalEnergies stations at Porte d'Aubervilliers, Porte d'Orléans and Quai d'Issy-les-Moulineaux have had their concession contracts amended by the city of Paris, which wants to reduce air pollution in the capital.

The mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has wanted to put an end to diesel fuel in the capital since the start of her mandate, and continues to reduce the role of the car, with more and more bicycle lanes and streets that are less and less suitable for vehicles. According to France 3, the supplier TotalEnergies estimates that this stoppage will"lead to a significant transfer of vehicles to neighboring stations, which are not designed to handle this new influx of customers", creating new traffic jams at the city's gates.

Despite this decision, many people living and working in the Paris region still use diesel vehicles, as hybrid and electric cars are not always financially accessible to all. They will therefore have to find other stations, if they were accustomed to the four that have closed, and in particular the emergency services, which still run on diesel, unlike Paris City Hall.
