Parisians are preparing for the return of the rain, with showers forecast for the night of Wednesday October 16 , 2024. Although ex-hurricaneLeslie, now downgraded to a low-pressure system, will not hit Paris directly, its influence will be felt through unstable weather across France.
The Île-de-France region is not expected to experience any intense Mediterranean episodes like those forecast for the south of France, but regular rainfall and gusty winds are to be expected this Wednesday evening, Thursday and Friday morning. According to Météo France, the day will remain calm, before the arrival of new disturbances during the night.
In the Île-de-France region, 7 departments have been placed on yellow alert for thunderstorms: Paris, Yvelines,Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne and Seine-et-Marne.
Unlike Kirk, which approached the west coast of France, the remnants of Leslie, born early last week in the Atlantic and initially classified as a category 2 out of 5 hurricane before being downgraded to an extra-tropical storm, is bringing a sustained south-south-westerly flow over southern Spain.
Vigilance is the order of the day in western France on Wednesday. Météo France is forecasting locally sustained and stormy rainfall due to the arrival of a cold front, while the Cévennes could receive between 100 and 150 mm of precipitation. It has placed 5 departments under orange vigilance.
In addition to Lozère and Gard, Alpes-Maritimes, Ardèche and Var have been placed under orange vigilance due to the risk of thunderstorms and rain-flooding linked to a Cevenol episode, according to the 6 a.m. bulletin for this Wednesday, October 16. The alert will remain in force until at least midnight.
While all five départements are covered by the rain and flood watch, the storm watch applies to only four of them: Lozère, Gard, Alpes-Maritimes and Var.
The Pyrenees are expecting heavy rain, with accumulations of 50 to 70 mm in places, and wind gusts reaching 100 km/h on the crests. In Languedoc, around 50 mm of rain is expected, while the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region and eastern Corsica will experience more moderate rainfall.
OnThursday, the cold front will move towards the center of France, bringing rainfall of 20 to 40 mm, and even up to 60 mm from the north of Occitania to Burgundy, according to Météo France. Thunderstorms, expected as early as Wednesday evening, should reach the Lyon region by Thursday evening. Further south, rainfall will intensify over the Languedoc and PACA regions, with accumulations of up to 80 mm, while the Cévennes could receive a further 100-150 mm. A relative respite is forecast for Friday, with rain affecting most of the country but less intensely.
