After a few weeks of renovations, the Musée Delacroix is eventually reopening. And on the occasion, the art place curates a brand-new exhibition! From February 18 to September 18, 2023, come and admire paintings by the famous painter and discover the mysterious bridge, a phenomenon found in several paintings of the artist.
The Delacroix and the arts – A mysterious bridge exhibition shines a light on different pieces from the museum’s collections. In all the rooms of the institution, from the painter’s studio to his former apartment, several paintings are given pride of place. They represent Eugène Delacroix’s passion for art and the importance he gave to painting.
Delacroix loved arts. Music, drama, literature, poetry, opera… He regularly used to go to show venues and literature circles, fascinated by his contemporary peers and major artists from the past. This love for art can be felt and seen in his paintings. To play, he takes the lights and the facial expressions making his characters alive. He is inspired by Shakespeare and Ovide to create new painitngs…
These influences are very varied, but yet do not prevent the artist to make innovative and original pieces, hung at the Musée Delacroix.
But this exhibition specifies how special painting was to Delacroix. For if “the writer says almost everything to be understood. In painting, there is like a mysterious bridge between the characters’ souls and the viewer’s”, he wrote in 1822 in his diary.
And this bridge between the characters and viewers, Eugène Delacroix often creates it through a look. Plenty of his subjects are turned forward, to us, calling us or looking at us. With this attitude, Delacroix’s painters invite to enter the painting, whilst wondering about our position: what are we looking in the scenes and decors?
A fascinating exhibition to visit asap!
