At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the aesthetics of jewelry underwent a radical evolution, with the advent ofArt Nouveau. This innovative artistic movement, driven by the exceptional spread of scientific knowledge, infused artisans with a new, invigorating creative energy.
L'École des Arts Joailliers'free exhibition at the heart of the Parisian institution, from June 2 to September 30, 2023, highlights this golden period in the history of the art of jewelry. Entitled "Un Art nouveau, métamorphoses du bijou", it unveils nearly 100 remarkable pieces from museum, heritage and private collections.
A veritable ode to nature and its phenomena, Art Nouveau jewelry is characterized by an exaggerated whimsy, oscillating between experimentation and artistic conception. Whether brooches, combs, pendants or rings, these exceptional objects illustrate flora and fauna through motifs of plants, flowers, insects and other creatures, assembled from stones, metals and materials of the highest value. In this creative scheme, the elements do not take precedence over the fantastical dreaminess of these pieces of unparalleled beauty.
Divided into three chapters, the exhibition at L'École des Arts Joailliers highlights the evolution of jewelry aesthetics influenced by the use of new visual repertoires, reflecting the scientific and cultural influences of the time.
The first section,"Natures féériques", presents jewelry inspired by hybrid and fantastical creatures; the second,"Éclosions", is dedicated to pieces inspired by the plant and animal worlds; while the last,"Abstractions", reveals how nature inspired abstract and geometric motifs in the art of jewelry.
Along the way, masterpieces by major jewellery houses such as Boucheron and Cartier, and renowned artists such as René Lalique, Georges Fouquet, Élisabeth Bonté, Victor Prouvé, Jean Dampt, Jules Desbois, Edward Colonna and Eugène Grasset shine.
An exhibition for art lovers and jewelry enthusiasts!
