For most French people, the French Revolution took place in 1789. Yet this was only the beginning of a great period of political and social upheaval in France, which ended ten years later with Napoleon Bonaparte's coup d'état. The Musée Carnavalet takes us back to this tumultuous period, and more specifically to the year 1793-1794, with its new exhibition entitled Paris 1793-1794 - Une année révolutionnaire. Come and discover it from October 16, 2024 to February 16, 2025.
Between September 1793 and September 1794, France lived through an important year, as dangerous as it was hopeful. We know this period as the"Terror". However, reality was not quite so simple...
The Musée Carnavalet exhibits over 250 works: paintings, sculptures, period clothing and puppets, objets d'art, archive documents, posters and furniture, in a fascinating thematic tour that reveals a rich period in French history. Drawings by artists Grouazel and Locard (authors of the comic strip Révolution) complete the tour.
The exhibition is therefore divided into different chapters: the new republic, the great figures of this revolutionary year, the Unity Day, the daily life of the French, trials and prison... The works show the violence, but also the celebrations, the dreams created by this new order, and the struggles between different groups and political parties. This year is marked by contradictions, contrasts and paradoxes.
The Musée Carnavalet presents a number of exceptional pieces, due to their history, rarity or beauty. The exhibition hits the bull's-eye in the very first rooms, with the painting of La Mort de Marat, the 1793 Declaration of the Rights of Man... You can even admire an 18th-century guillotine blade or the burnt remains of the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen! Yes, you should know: the Revolution was a bloody and violent period, and this is reflected in the works and exhibits on display.
The exhibition brings together a number of astonishing objects, and allows us to hear revolutionary songs... This little-known year, often misinterpreted, turns out to be fascinating and full of surprises. If you're a lover ofFrench history, don't miss this exhibition from the Musée Carnavalet.
