Butte-aux-Cailles is a mythical Paris neighborhood, despite its small size. It's true that this corner of the capital is unlike any other, with its small houses lined up along quiet, winding streets. The district owes its original name to Pierre Caille, the first owner of this hill originally covered with meadows, vineyards, woods and windmills, acquired in 1543.
Limestone mining has now ceased, as hasindustrial activity, and the dyeing, tanning, bleaching and tanning factories have all closed their doors. Today, the Butte-aux-Cailles is a quiet, human-scale neighborhood where it's pleasant to take a stroll when the weather's fine.
At every street crossroads, the curious stumble across the many works of street art that abound in the area, as well as small, unspoilt pubs and quiet, leafy squares. Fancy a trip to the Butte-aux-Cailles? Then follow the guide!
