Great news for gourmets who were won over by Petit Bao, the 2nd arrondissement stall that has been showcasing Shanghai cuisine since it opened in 2019: thePetit Bao team has opened a second location in the capital .
Named Gros Bao, this second address opened its doors just a few weeks ago. Located just a stone's throw from the Canal Saint-Martin, Quai de Jemmapes, Gros Bao is already delighting quite a few gourmets on its 350m2 premises, judging by the queue outside the spot's doors!
The decor, by Mur.Mur architectes, takes the kitschy codes of Chinese catering but modernizes them, with a nice Hong Kong inspiration. On the first floor, a large bao counter and a bar with numerous taps of natural wine and craft beers by Deck & Donohue. Upstairs, a terrace overlooking the Canal Saint-Martin. What better way to spend a convivial moment.
And what's on the à la carte menu? Great classics of Chinese cuisine and dishes to share on the iconic turntables; and two great specialties: large, generously garnished baos (two already on Petit Bao 's menu and a new one, the Char Siu Bao (8€ for both), garnished with braised pork; and Peking Peking duck (30€ for half a duck), the recipe for which is kept secret. To be eaten rolled up in a small pancake, accompanied by vegetables. Really good!
Other original dishes include lion's heads (12€), dumplings of minced farmhouse pork as juicy as Peking duck, and Lu Rou Fan Taiwan Style (6€), a fragrant rice dish served with braised pork, an egg marinated in soy sauce and mustard leaf pickles. You'll also want to try the eggplant appetizer, marinated in a garlic vinaigrette (4€), fresh and slightly spicy.
Gros Bao offers three desserts. We opted for the crispy baozi (4€) and the fried baos (4€), dipped in condensed milk. Yummy!
A place to try this summer!
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
