Up to 4 centimeters of snow in Paris, the capital hasn't seen anything like it since 1968. After the snowfall, it's now getting colder and icy, this Friday November 22. We take a look at the situation regarding closures, transport and traffic in Paris and the whole of the Île-de-France region.

After the passage of Storm Caetano, the snow is giving way to cold and icy conditions this Friday, November 22, 2024. The first flakes, which fell on Thursday, quickly covered the region, paralyzing some infrastructures. While the capital recorded up to 4 cm of snow, some departments in the outer suburbs, such as Yvelines, Essonne and Val-d'Oise, recorded accumulations of up to 12 cm. Météo France is extending the "vigilance orange neige-verglas" (orange snow-ice alert) until midday for the whole of the Paris region, calling for extra caution.

The icy conditions, combined with temperatures of between -1°C and -5°C, are making the roads particularly dangerous. The meteorological services are also forecasting the possibility of further localized flakes in the morning, likely to add 3 cm of snow in places. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, particularly in view of the risk of slippery roads and specific driving bans.

School transport suspended in the inner suburbs

The départements of the greater Paris region (Yvelines, Essonne, Val-d'Oise, Seine-et-Marne) are suspending school transport this Friday. However, schools will remain open, according to the prefectures concerned. The Essonne prefecture specifies that this measure is intended to ensure safety in the face of icy conditions and possible snow showers expected in the morning.

Public transport disruptions

On Thursday, bad weather affected many lines. The T13 tramway remains out of service after a tree fell, and several bus and light rail lines have been slowed down. In Paris and the inner suburbs, 35 bus lines, including the TVM and lines 40, 47, 102 and 114, suffered major disruptions. According to Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP, traffic on the T9 tramway has been affected on the entire line. On the RER, line C is experiencing disruption on the section between Brétigny and Dourdan. On line D, traffic is completely disrupted between Juvisy and Malesherbes via Ris-Orangis, with normal service expected to resume around 9:30 am.

Weather conditions are also complicating traffic on several Transilien lines. Line H is disrupted in its entirety, as is the section of line J linking Vernon-Giverny to Saint-Lazare, line N between Dreux and Montparnasse, and line P between Coulommiers and Gare de l'Est.

On line R, traffic is interrupted between Montereau and Melun via Héricy, with an estimated resumption around 9 a.m. Finally, the L and U lines are experiencing disruption due to a technical incident.

RATP and SNCF are inviting users to stay informed in real time via their applications.

Complicated traffic on Paris region roads

The icy conditions are making the roads particularly dangerous. Speed limits are in place on freeways, and heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are banned from the N118 until midday on Friday.

Black ice has caused an accident on the N104 between Saint-Michel-sur-Orge and Brétigny-sur-Orge, in the Essonne region. The incident involved two cars and three heavy goods vehicles, according to the Sytadin barometer. At 8 a.m., the barometer recorded more than 145 km of traffic jams on Paris region roads, a figure slightly above the usual average.

Snow and ice plan restrictions are still in force, with a 20 km/h speed reduction and a ban on heavy goods vehicles overtaking. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution, especially on secondary roads where the risk of slipping is high due to sub-zero temperatures.

Eiffel Tower closed

Last but not least, iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower remain closed until 1pm today, due to weather conditions. Although rare, this situation is a reminder of the importance of adapting quickly to the vagaries of the weather in a region unaccustomed to such snowy episodes.
