The town of Versailles is applying the precautionary principle to the arrival of storm Ciaran, forecast for this Wednesday evening. According to information provided by Météo-France, this storm, initially affecting north-western France, will bring with it impressive winds, sweeping both coastal and inland areas. Faced with this potentially dangerous situation, the municipal authorities have decided to implement safety measures, including the closure of the city's parks and gardens as of this Wednesday evening, November 1, 2023.
If you feel like taking a stroll in these green spaces, we advise you to be patient. Before reopening, the trees will be thoroughly checked. Caution is therefore advised, and the city advises you to avoid using the tree-lined walkways during this period.
Due to weather conditions, the Domaine de Marly, the Gardens and Park of the Château de Versailles and the Domaine de Trianon will be closed this Thursday, November 2. The exhibition Noël Coypel, Peintre de Grands Décors will not be accessible. The Château de Versailles will remain accessible.
The same applies to Saint-Cyr l' Ecole, which has decided to close the Plaine de jeux, the landscape cemetery and the Parc Maurice-Leluc this Thursday, November 2.
In Carrières-sous-Poissy, the Hôtel de Ville park, the Maison de la Jeunesse et de la réussite and the municipal gardens were closed at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, and will remain closed until 12 p.m. on Friday. The city said on its social networks that the reopening will take place only after a complete check of the trees to ensure the safety of visitors. Residents are also advised to avoid areas with trees.
In Rambouillet, the town hall has advised that the Parc de Groussay, the Jardin de la Motte and the Bois des Cheminaux will remain closed until the end of the rainy and windy spell. They will reopen on condition that no damage has occurred.
The Prefect of Yvelines prohibits access to and traffic in the department's forests on Thursday November 2, 2023.
Storm Ciaran is particularly feared. Nearly 20% of mainland France could experience wind gusts in excess of 100km/h. This Wednesday evening will mark the storm's entrance, from the tip of Brittany to the Paris region, and on Thursday November 2 it will mainly impact regions such as Normandy, Hauts de France and Brittany. However, its effects will not be confined to these regions alone. Île-de-France, in particular, will have to prepare for gusts reaching 80 km/h in places, particularly in its western part, according to Météo France forecasts.
Another worrying factor is the state of the soil. The latter, weakened by the heavy rainfall of the past few days, may not be able to withstand the strong gusts. All the more so since, as agro-meteorologist Serge Zaka points out on X (ex-Twitter), trees have not lost their leaves due to the mild autumn, thus increasing the wind load. The risk of falling trees is therefore very real, and calls for heightened vigilance on the part of residents.
In view of these exceptional circumstances, we urge you to be extra cautious. Limit your movements, respect official directives and stay informed. It's best to be prepared for the forces of nature.
