Île-de-France is on alert. With storm Ciaran expected to hit in the evening of Wednesday November 1, parks and gardens are taking precautionary measures. Like the town of Versailles, the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud in western Paris will not be open to visitors this Thursday, November 2, 2023. This decision was taken after analysis of weather forecasts predicting strong gusts of wind, which could reach vertiginous speeds of 100 to 110 km/h, particularly over the western Paris region.
Before reaching our region, Ciaran will have swept across Normandy, Hauts-de-France and Brittany. While its exact strength in the Île-de-France region remains uncertain, specialists are expecting winds of up to 80 km/h between Wednesday and Thursday. The situation is exacerbated by recent rainfall, which has weakened the soil. These gusts could cause many trees to fall. Extra caution is advised if you need to travel.
If anyone were to defy the ban and visit the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud while it is closed, they would have to assume all the risks. In this case, access will be via the Grille d'Honneur only.
In addition to the park, other emblematic sites in the region will be inaccessible. The town's parks and gardens, the cemetery and the Musée des Avelines will all be closed. As for a stroll around the Ville d'Avray ponds, we strongly advise against it.
In the face of Ciaran's imminent arrival, Météo-France offers little reassurance. The capital and the surrounding region are likely to be severely affected, with strong winds expected overnight on Wednesday. Regions north of the Seine are particularly in the firing line, with gusts approaching 140 km/h near the coast, and oscillating between 100 and 120 km/h inland.
Despite this threat, no specific recommendations have been issued by local authorities. In view of this situation, the Sécurité Civile has issued a reminder of the usual precautions: limit your movements, secure your outdoor furniture and bring an emergency kit in case of evacuation.
With these probable risks, we can only recommend caution. Stay tuned to the news and make sure you and your loved ones are safe.
