The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are the means for all sports fans, but also the curious who wish to take a closer look, to witness a great sporting celebration over several weeks. Both awaited and feared by the French, this competition promises to be a colorful affair.

In 2024, four sports will be added to the more traditional disciplines of the Olympic Games, and Sortir à Paris wants you to find out more about them, so you don't find yourself lost on D-day! Every month, we'll be presenting a rather unknown sport to the general public, right up to the deadline in July 2024. Today, we're taking a closer look at breaking, an urban dance style derived from hip hop culture, and straight from the USA!

A brief history

Developed in the 1970s, breaking, better known as breakdance, originated in the Bronx, at neighborhood parties. This street dance is particularly acrobatic and highly visual, with its figures on the floor, inseparable from the hip hop milieu. The discipline is distinguished from other dance styles by the roles of DJ and master of ceremonies at breaking battles.

These very recent dance battles developed particularly in the 90s, when international battles were organized and popularized breaking. During the competitions, the athletes, known as B-Boys and B-Girls, compete in 1vs1 or in crews, improvising to the music to win the judges' vote. It's a discipline of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), founded in 1957.

In the history of the Olympic Games

This is the very first time that breaking has made an appearance at the Olympic Games. It is entering as an additional sport, alongside surfing, skateboarding and climbing, for a test run to see if the discipline appeals to the public. So it's not certain that it will be on the Olympic program again in the future. Breaking's arrival was prompted by its success at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games in 2018. The history of breaking at the Games has yet to be written!

Our French athletes

France is one of the leading breaking nations, along with the USA and Japan. Mounir Biba, three-time world breaking champion, distinguished himself in the industry a decade ago.

For Paris 2024, only 32 athletes will be selected, i.e. 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls, from September 23, 2023 to June 2024. As host country, France automatically receives two places . France is expected to support Danis Civil, also known as "Danny Dan", Marlone Alvarez and Carlota Dudek. Who will win breaking's first Olympic title?
