In the sabre event, Manon Apithy-Brunet and Sara Balzer delivered a breathtaking final. It has to be said that French doubles at the Olympic Games are a rarity: there have only been four since the middle of the last century, including the legendary duel between Laura Flessel and Valérie Barlois in 1996.
In the marvellous setting of the Grand Palais, Manon Apithy-Brunet and Sara Balzer battled it out in a merciless final, although the Lyonnaise won the gold medal for two thirds of the time, while her compatriot took the silver. Deprived of a ringside seat, as is customary in a Franco-French final, the coaches of the two Frenchwomen soon joined them in a fitting celebration of the two sabre fencers.
This day on July 29 will go down in the history of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with no fewer than 8 victories won by France: these two medals in sabre, as well as a silver medal in equestrian; a silver medal in mountain biking; a silver medal in archery; a silver medal in judo; a bronze medal in judo; and a gold medal in canoeing.
Well done, girls!
